Green Initiatives

About 4 years ago, ContainerWorld Forwarding Services Inc. made the decision to adopt sustainable supply chain logistics practices wherever it would be applicable and feasible. Our main focuses have been in waste reduction, energy consumption, emissions reduction, process efficiencies and asset utilization. Specific to efficiencies, our strategies have been towards redesign (workflow), optimization software, and storage innovations.

To classify our initiatives, we have adopted the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) five key areas of human and environmental health. We are currently evaluating the LEED EB Certification.

Energy Efficiency

Involved in the initial building design, ContainerWorld modeled a sustainable site for our facility.

  • Building operates with installed T8 fluorescent lighting utilizing occupancy motion sensors on every ballast at two minute intervals; solution covers an indoor area of 486,000 ft
  • We are examining the use of fuel cells in our material handling equipment
  • On-demand water heaters are installed throughout facility
  • Photo sensors control the availability of external lighting
  • All truck doors use environmental dock seals and dock shelters to restrict heat loss

Materials Selection

As a 3PL service provider, we have endeavoured to influence our customers/suppliers wherever possible; our primary focus is on waste reduction.

  • All cardboard, paper, glass and aluminum waste is binned and processed for recycling
  • Plastic wrap and plastic slip sheets are baled and processed for recycling
  • Received pallets are reused where applicable; unusable pallets are processed in "wood chippers" as reusable materials
  • Completely electric fleet of material handling equipment
  • Carbon free tires used throughout facility
  • Chemical free, citrus based industrial cleaners mandated

Water Efficiency

ContainerWorld is a "light" water consumer. Water is used for building cleanup and standard employee usage only.

  • Reduced water usage by way of mechanical floor scrubbers using water re-circulation
  • Waste water is passed through a neutralizing tank in the event of accidental battery acid spills
  • Fleet cleaning with water recovery technology following provincial environmental regulations
